Green Kid Crafts – Insect Explorer
“School’s out for the summer!” This song has been stuck in my head ever since Gabe got out of school on May 24th. Doesn’t that seem early to you? Anyway, summer is here and I’m doing everything possible to keep my little goober engaged without resorting to the dreaded technology. Some days are better than others and I am always down for help with new projects… which is why I love Green Kid Crafts!
We received our box in the mail and Gabe knew it had to be for him, judging by the bright colors and cute handprint logo on the front. Saved by the box! There were enough projects included to keep him busy for an entire afternoon!
Each Green Kid Crafts box comes with a sticker to collect on the included badge chart. This month’s badge says ‘Entomology Expert’ to go along with the Insect Explorer theme.
Also included is a STEAM magazine that explains the box’s theme and includes fun activities to do inside the booklet. There are even additional suggestions to do once you’re through with the box contents!
All of the projects were divided into three bags. Everything looks neat and tidy and we could easily see what projects we could do with each bag. I love the fact that the packaging is recycled and recyclable!
GREEN KIT
Gabe picked this green bag to open first. It contained little rubber eraser bugs, wooden stickers, and a couple plastic bugs along with a plastic magnifying jar and an instruction booklet.
Gabe enjoyed decorating the magnifying jar with the ladybug stickers, but his favorite part of this activity was going outside to find a bug to put inside it! Because it was the middle of a hot day, we struggled to find any larger bugs roaming in the backyard. However, we did find a little roly poly hiding underneath a rock near the tree!
Gabe named his roly poly “Dilly” because it reminds him of an armadillo! They curl up when they’re scared and have lots of tiny legs. Did you know roly polies are a type of terrestrial crustacean? After thorough examination, we released little Dilly back into the yard to go about his roly poly business.
The last project in the green bag was to create a tic-tac-toe board out of the empty box. That was an easy enough task for Gabe to do and we played several rounds of tic-tac-toe using the cute bug erasers provided!
BLUE KIT
Gabe saw the beehive picture on the blue bag and tore it open SO FAST! It was all I could do to get the pictures before he got started on the project.
The blue booklet provided instructions for three projects but, admittedly, we only did the two that had supplies. Project 3 involved yarn, which we did not have at the house at the time!
Gabe made quick work of the beehive! I was impressed at his problem-solving skills. He used the lid of his magnifying jar to trace a circle in the black construction paper before cutting! He used a glue stick to clue it in place and then carefully placed the wooden bee stickers all around the “hole.” This was one of Gabe’s favorite projects to complete!
The second project used Wikki Stix to create 2D (and/or 3D) bugs! We chose to use the connect-the-dots template included with the Wikki Stix to make this cute dragonfly. I have never heard of Wikki Stix before but they’re basically wax-covered pieces of yarn that can be molded to create different shapes and can also stick to paper!
PURPLE KIT
This was the last bag we opened, but was definitely the most involved. Gabe couldn’t believe how many tiny markers were included and I couldn’t believe how big these coffee filters were!
Chromatography butterflies were new to me! I was grateful for the instructions here. I have some experience with the second project, having made little treat bags like these for Pre-K snacks in the past. 🙂
The included markers unfortunately were mostly dried out, but we used regular washable markers and they seemed to work out nicely! Gabe experimented with different colors and patterns on the coffee filters before soaking them in the cup. Gabe even colored one of our tiny coffee filters to see how it would work out! I think that little butterfly turned out pretty cute too.
The booklet suggested using the bags that the kits came in to make these butterfly bags, but Gabe was a little overzealous and tore them open… so I improvised with a snack bag. Gabe chose out his snacks and twisted the pipe cleaner to make a body and antennas. This project didn’t last very long though. Gabe pretty much took one look at it and then asked if he could eat his snacks yet!
Final Thoughts
Green Kid Crafts is awesome! Not only did it distract my child from watching TV or playing video games, but we had so much fun talking about bugs, making crafts, and exploring our backyard. The entire experience could have easily been spread out over a few days, but Gabe was too excited to be held back.
Gabe completed several activities in his main workbook and completed seven different crafts. I think this subscription box is totally worth the $25.90 that it costs. That’s only $3.70 per craft (not including the workbook activities), which is comparable to the cost of kids’ craft days at Michael’s!
We give this box FOUR THUMBS UP! What a great subscription to do with kids over the summer break!
