January 2016 Litu Box
I live in Asheville NC where you can easily find all things local, artisan, handcrafted, fair trade, and organic. I consider myself blessed to live in such an amazing city comprised of small businesses, which is why I try to keep an eye out for subscription boxes that embody this feeling of community and sustainability. I was stoked to discover Litu Box and couldn’t wait to open up my first box!
The Cost: $30.00 per month + $6.95 shipping
Monthly and 3-month subscriptions available (auto-renews)
Litu Box placed a cute card on top of the contents notifying the subscriber that everything was packaged in eco-friendly materials! This is great!
I also received an information card, which describes all of the items contained in the box.
Ceramic Buddha Incense Holder – Value: $9.99
This is a 3″ tall fair trade incense burner with a 3.5″ ceramic dish and has two holes for incense; one that holds the thicker Tibetan style dhoop (hand-rolled incense shaped into sticks) and one for the thinner joss (bamboo sticks coated with a thick layer of incense). Handmade in Nepal.
I’m pretty sure all of my incense and holders are still boxed up from when we moved into our house… almost four years ago… ahem… Anyhoo, I was thrilled to see this beautiful holder and immediately scavenged to find the source of the wonderful fragrance wafting out of the box.
Best Quality Incense Sampler – Value: $4.00
Oh man. This package smells so great!! There are three different types of incense included in the sampler. One packet is Sandalwood & Jasmine Dhoop that was hand rolled by a group of Newari nuns and is made of only 100% natural ingredients. (This smells divine.) The next packet contains Nag Champa Satya Sai Baba Joss, which is a special blend of 100% natural herbs, resins, flowers and oils, all hand-rolled. Apparently each stick will burn for 45 minutes! The final packet is Nag Champa Satya Baba Super Hit Joss and is a little sweeter than the original Nag Champa sticks. I have only lit the dhoop so far and absolutely love it!
Windhorse Prayer Flags – Value: $2.00
Tibetan prayer flags are proudly displayed in practically every neighborhood in Asheville. I always thought they were pretty but never knew the purpose… until now!
Windhorse prayer flags are traditionally hung by Tibetans in high places to catch the wind so that the prayer will be carried out to bless all sentient beings. The prayer printed on each flag is intended to bring blessings and good fortune to the world.
I received two sets of these 3″ flags and will try to find a place to display them in our house away from our six cats, dog, and toddler… on second thought I may be gifting these to a safer home.
Alluvia Handmade Leather Journal – Value: $28.00
This is just the coolest cruelty-free leather journal made by an artisan cooperative called Eco Friendly Papers in the state of Rajasthan, India. Just look at the embossed detail on the leather!
The paper is made from recycled scraps of waste textile (cotton!) and is 100% tree-free. The paper is really soft and has a great texture! There are 72 blank pages.
This 4″ x 6″ journal snaps shut and is lined with gorgeous fabric. I love this. So. Much.
Earnest Eats Energy Bar (Double Choco Espresso) – Value: $1.80
This is 100% natural, wheat-free, and vegan. Health bars are usually not my thing but they had me at “double choco espresso.” This is actually pretty darn good, I’m impressed! I took the package’s suggestion and enjoyed it with my coffee at work one morning. This has a nice soft, chewy texture and isn’t too sweet (sweets are difficult for me in the a.m.).
Oskri Mini Coconut Bar (Milk Chocolate) – Value $1.25
This looks like an organic, milk chocolate version of a Mounds bar. I am saving this little treat for later (and hiding it from Little G).
Organic India Tulsi Tea (Holy Basil) – Value: $5.99
Three sacred varieties of Tulsi with potent restorative powers are blended to create this delicious, calming, yet energizing tea with hints of lemon and citrus from Vana Tulsi, the slightly spicy tones of Krishna Tulsi, and the calm depth of Rama Tulsi. Certified 100% organic, caffeine-free, gluten-free, abundant in antioxidant, and stress-relieving.
This sounds like some awesome tea! Jonathan pointed out to me that I always think I like tea but never actually end up drinking it. I have a bajillion types of tea taking up space in our kitchen already, so unfortunately I must accept that I will not drink this. I will be bringing this box into work and giving it to one of my coworkers (who actually drinks tea!).
My Thoughts
January 2016 Litu Box Total Value: $53.03
This is my first Litu Box and I am genuinely impressed with the unique curation and overall value packed into this month’s package. This box pretty much epitomizes Asheville NC and would make the perfect gift for anyone who is homesick for our sweet city. My mom and I practically fought over who would keep everything in here. I am curious to see the variations between months and am looking forward to the February box!
