HomeBrew Quick Pickle Mix Review
I used to can pickles and other vegetables back in the day when we gardened a lot and had young, hungry kids. Canning was always a major event with hours of prep and then the final timed, careful use of the water bath canner or, even worse, the pressure canner. Even with all that work, I still enjoyed putting food by so we could enjoy our summer garden’s bounty all year long. So when I found three different varieties of “pickle it fresh” HomeBrew Quick Pickle Mix in our March 2018 Degustabox, I was really excited to try them out!
I had tasted pickled onions before but had never heard of pickled pineapple or pickled apples! Each packet of seasoning mix was enough to put up a pint jar of pickles. And each variety called for a slightly different ratio of vinegar/sugar/water but the basic simple directions were identical.
No big water bath canner or pressure canner needed for this quick pickle mix. All you have to do is to assemble your fruits or veggies in a clean canning jar, then combine your pickle seasoning mix, vinegar, water, and sugar in the correct proportions in a sauce pan. Bring the mixture to a boil, pour it into your jar of future pickles, secure your lid on top, and put it in your refrigerator. In 24 hours your pickles are ready to eat. How easy is that?
The three mixes I used were Spicy Pineapple, Snappy Apple, and Pickled Red Onion. The mixes had easy to follow directions and I had my pickles in the refrigerator within an hour. Prepping the fruit took the longest time and, since each variety of mix required different ingredient proportions, I had to mix and boil each one separately. If I had been preparing several jars of the same mix the time would have easily been cut in half.
So how did my pickles taste? My favorite was the Spicy Pineapple. Sweet with a hint of spice – just right! I could eat the whole jar in one sitting! And my husband’s favorite was the Pickled Red Onion that he has been putting in his lunch sandwiches every day. The Snappy Apple came in last. The little pieces of clove and cinnamon clung to the apple slices and gave them an unpleasant taste – worse than unpleasant if you miss a piece of clove and bite down on it. And who wants to wash off your pickles before you eat them? But overall I really loved making our pickles and trying them out! And I love that I can go back to putting up some fresh fruits and veggies for just the two of us without spending the whole day at it!
HomeBrew makes all different kinds of quick pickle mixes. And I do mean different – like Spicy Kimchi, Taco Medley, Sauerkraut, Old World Garlic, and Tangy Beet – plus all the usual types of pickle flavors. Plus they have lots of different recipe ideas on their Facebook page. Check it out!

Interesting. I too used to do pickling and canning when my kids were young. I would like to try this. I would like to try the Spicy Pinapple and Tangy Beet to start.
