February 2016 Jerky Snob
Oooooohh snap! We got jerky!! Mom reviewed Jerky Snob in December and it looked so darn delicious. It surprises me how difficult it is to find good quality, natural jerky in the stores. This is why Jerky Snob is my new best friend. Not only is it free of YUCK (i.e. MSG, nitrates, nitrites, high fructose corn syrup, and a bunch of other ingredients I can’t pronounce), but each box has a variety of new flavors to try from multiple small-batch, artisan vendors. I mean, c’mon, how could you go wrong??

First peek into the box and I see a highly detailed information sheet on the selections this month!
I received the 1/2 LB box, which is the perfect size for me to share with Jonathan (if he’s lucky). This month’s box has jerky from all across the country! I received four very different bags.
Think Jerky Sweet Chipotle (1.5 oz) – Value: $5.79
This is a very complex piece of meat heralding from Chicago, IL! Think Jerky is a new company founded by Ricky Hirsch and features recipes made by some of the world’s greatest chefs! All beef is 100% grass-fed and is combined with a blend of spices while consciously minimizing sugar and salt.
The sweet chipotle jerky started out quite smoky and I could taste the peppers right away, but it wasn’t immediately spicy. As I chewed, the sweetness of the raspberries came out followed by a kick of spice at the end! One thing to note is this is not as salty as some jerky, which is really quite nice. It is also subtly sweet (not overpowering). I’m impressed with the layering of flavors, but it definitely made me sweat after a few pieces. This may be a good thing. Self-control…
Lucky Jerky Original (3 oz) – Value: $7.50
Lucky Jerky is a family-owned company from Holdrege, NE that uses only the Worlds Best USDA Choice Natural Angus and Wagyu Beef. The family prides themselves on raising their own cattle without the use of antibiotics or growth hormones and maintaining the highest standard in 100% organic processing, transporting and packaging their products!
This jerky is the bomb. (Yep, I said it.) Probably the best jerky I’ve ever tasted in my life. There are visible flecks of dehydrated vegetables on every piece, which really packs in the flavor. This is a slightly softer jerky, which is my preference. It is perfectly mild and subtly sweet. I never knew what “Original” jerky meant until now. Way to set the bar, Lucky.
Side Project Jerky Southwestern (2 oz) – Value: $9.00
Side Project Jerky was founded by two work colleagues, Marcos Espinoza and Mark Novasack in Philadelphia, PA. The company boasts delicious marinades and exact drying times for perfectly flavored and textured jerky, branded as “Jerky for Gentlemen.”
Jonathan was the first to break into the Southwestern bag and then I couldn’t get it away from him. This is by far his favorite jerky of all time in the history of the universe and forever going forward. It has an instantaneous “ka-pow” of green chile with a good balance of heat from the cayenne. It’s a bit saltier than I’m into, but Jonathan told me to shut it and that it was perfect. He said the Southwestern jerky is what green Tabasco sauce wants to be when it grows up.
Field Trip Terijaki No. 23 (2.2 oz) – Value: $5.69
Field Trip was created by three best friends, Scott, Tom, and Matt, who love food, nutrition, and authentic beef jerky. Based in New York, NY, Field Trip delivers original flavor profiles with no added MSG, preservatives, nitrates, high fructose corn syrup or artificial ingredients. REAL jerky with ingredients you can understand.
This is my second favorite out of the box. I am a SUCKER for Teriyaki jerky, so it would have to be pretty terrible for me not to like it. That being said, I LOVED this bag (notice I said lov-ED… as in, the bag is empty now). I tasted every ingredient and felt they blended together for a great balance of flavor. My only slight criticism is that this jerky was a bit on the dry side for my taste. I love chewing on jerky, not gnawing. 😉
My Thoughts
February 2016 Jerky Snob Total Value: $27.98
Jerky Box just rocked my world. I am sad that this month’s flavor journey has come to an end, but I’m confident that we’ll be back! And can I just say WOW to the value? I mean, we just tried an amazing selection of artisan, small-batch jerky sourced from all across the U.S. having never left our house. Not only that, but the retail value is actually $1 higher than the total box cost!!
It felt great knowing that every type of jerky in this box is safe to eat and without all the added garbage that is listed (for miles) in the ingredients of most commercial brands. Call me a nerd, but I also enjoyed learning about the different independent companies that were featured. It’s awesome to know that there’s still a huge passion for health-conscious, delicious jerky out there.
The best part? Jerky Box just reminded us of the reason why we love jerky.
