February 2016 Alpha Outpost Review – “The Medic”
Alpha Outpost is a monthly lifestyle subscription box for men curated around a different theme each month. Each box “provides the tools and supplies you need to take any situation by the jugular” and is guaranteed to be valued at least twice as high as the purchase price. Alpha Outpost is owned and operated by U.S. military veterans. Their boxes prepare you for a different situation each month, from roadside emergencies to surviving in the wilderness to becoming a dapper gentleman. This is not a tactical box geared for military vets, but instead is designed to be a lifestyle box for anyone wanting to be prepared for anything that comes their way.
The Costs: Starting at $39.95 per month + $6.95 s/h
(cheaper for multi-month subscriptions)
The Homespun Chics received this box for review. All opinions are 100% our own.
You never know when you might need to use emergency medical supplies. We hope never to have to face critical situations without medical support immediately available. But it happens. To have the supplies on hand to provide immediate control of the situation until help arrives can make the difference between life or death.
With a personal history of being a Navy Corpsman, Navy Nurse, Emergency Department nurse and ED nurse practitioner (in that order), I was eager to review “The Medic” box! And I was extremely impressed by the thoroughness of the contents and the directions given for their use. This is an Aid Station in a box. And with a deep breath and drawing on inner strength, anyone can use them. Take a look at the Box Contents card.
The first thing you see when you open the box is a red and black nylon sling bag for keeping and carrying your medical supplies. RED – for blood. RED – so it stands out and you can see it immediately!
There is a full page size pictorial with illustrations and a quick find chart for supplies needed for Profuse Bleeding, Emergency Airway, Chest Wound, and Fracture.
Before you start looking into the supply packages, you find Alpha Outpost’s Emergency Medical Manual. It was designed by people who have been there, done that – former combat medics, Green Berets and a former CIA operative. These folks know what it’s like out in the field and their directions are clear and to the point. The steps to you need to take to assess the situation and the ABCDE of emergency medicine are right in front.
Next there are instructions, one topic to a page in large type and with illustrations to guide you, on Controlling Bleeding, using the Rapid Action Tourniquet System (“Place it High, or Die”), Chest Wound, CPR, Head/Spinal/Neck injury, Shock Treatment, and Frostbite/Heat Stroke. The last page is a chart to let you keep a record of the situation. Write it down so you don’t forget and provide the information to EMS.
Now we can take a look at the different emergency packs in the box. Each of these packs is sealed in heavy plastic but with an easy open end – you just pull it apart and access your supplies. The only items included in the box but not sealed in plastic are the tourniquet, bandage scissors and a 4X4 sterile gauze. Each pack has Fast Action Use directions right on front.
The Rapid Action Tourniquet System (RATS) is a lifesaver! This tourniquet can be applied with one hand and uses successive wraps to achieve the right width for the correct compression to stop the loss of blood.
Blood is everywhere, and you don’t know why. Here are some tools to help you get them by.
Profuse Bleeding Pack – This has a pressure bandage, medical tape, gauze, super glue and gloves. There are few situations where a tourniquet is needed. Most bleeding can be controlled by pressure to the site of the wound unless an artery has been severed.
Loss of breath and the victim is down. Use these tools to help bring them around.
Emergency Airway Pack – This has a nasopharyngeal hose (for the nose), oropharyngeal hose (for the mouth), CPR mask, lubricant, and gloves. Directions for CPR are right there for you. Keep it going until help arrives or until you just can’t go any longer!
Shot or stabbed they only have minutes to spare. These tools give you time till experts are there.
Chest Wound Pack – This has gauze, tape, chest seal and gloves. Such a traumatic event requires immediate action! Don’t try to remove the penetrating object – stabilize it and let the pros remove it at the hospital! Keep the victim warm as shock will soon set in.
Bones are broken, help is far away. Here are the tools you need to help save the day.
Fracture Pack – This has SAM splint, pressure wrap, tape, gauze and gloves. Stabilize the fracture, apply pressure to any bleeding, keep an eye on the circulation below the fractured area.
Built from a thin core of aluminum alloy and sandwiched between two layers of closed-cell foam, the SAM Splint can be bent into any of three simple curves, becoming extremely strong and supportive for any fractured or injured limb. The SAM Splint is incredibly lightweight (only 4.0 oz.), and no other device offers so many variations for the treatment of orthopedic emergencies. – SamMedical.com
The February 2016 Alpha Outpost “The Medic” was an outstanding emergency medical box! No one expects an emergency to happen but every day thousands of people get injured or have a sudden medical event. Every part of the world has its own kind of natural disaster just around the corner. Be prepared! The value of the contents ($105) well exceeds the cost of the subscription box. The value of the assistance you could render with its contents can’t be calculated.
So awesome!! Talk about always being prepared!! I would have no worries having this with me!!
This would be great to have for emergencies.
