Gabe is gearing up for kindergarten in the fall and I thought it would be nice to surprise him with a 3-month subscription for the Bookroo Picture Books box! It was hard keeping it a secret, but luckily I signed up in time to still receive the April 2018 Bookroo box so we didn’t have to wait too long. Gabe was SO excited to see what he got!
Bookroo always includes an information card that briefly describes the books and provides a link for extension activities to do with your children!
Gabe chose to open the green wrapped book first. He immediately started looking through the pages and requested I start reading to him right then!
Bear Likes Jam – Written and Illustrated by Ciara Gavin
When Bear discovers jam for the time, he can’t think of anything else. Mama Duck tells him that growing bears need to eat their vegetables first . . . but Bear can’t stand the strange green things on his plate. He only wants jam! It’s not until Bear notices the little ducks around him eating ALL of their food, that it finally clicks: Bear can have his dinner and his jam. This tender follow-up to Bear Is Not Tired will hit home with every family of finicky eaters.
Bear Loves Jam was the perfect book to receive this month. The watercolor illustrations are precious and the message was awesome. We’ve been struggling to get the focus off dessert and treats ever since Easter. (We still have a LOT of Easter candy left…) Gabe and I had a major breakthrough after reading this book a few times through. He was able to focus more on dinner and how to make eating his vegetables fun, rather than when he can expect dessert. The best part is that he constantly talks about Bear’s love of jam but that he always eats his food beforehand.

Time for Round 2!
Gabe was really, really excited when he saw the fun illustrations on this one! What boy doesn’t love robot dinosaurs and houses made out of ice cream?!
Big Ideas of Buster Bickles – Written and Illustrated by Dave Wasson
Buster Bickles’s big ideas are always getting him into trouble. But when Buster gets to test the newly invented What-if Machine, anything Buster imagines becomes reality. Packed with rivers of chocolate, robot dinosaurs, and eggs-ray vision, the world becomes Buster’s creation in this fantastically creative picture book by debut author-illustrator Dave Wasson.
Big Ideas of Buster Bickles is a phenomenal book that encourages children to use their imaginations and dream big! Gabe was able to relate to Buster Bickles at show-and-tell. Sometimes kids can be mean (with no filter) and wind up hurting their peers’ self-esteem — especially when it comes to interpreting each other’s creative drawings and stories. Buster helped Gabe to respect his friends’ “inventions” on paper and through show-and-tell while also feeling confident in his own creations even when his friends didn’t understand them. The book was thoughtful and fun with bright illustrations that had Gabe hooked for an hour.

The Bookroo April 2018 Picture Book box was a huge win for us. We always enjoy discovering new books, but these two hit it out of the ballpark with my kid. I’m happy that we re-subscribed to Bookroo and am looking forward to the May 2018 Bookroo box (that just shipped!).
Have any of you tried Bookroo? What do you think of the books we received?
Let me know in the comments!

This is a great idea. I want to get this for my granddaughters.
This would be great for my niece and nephews! They would all really enjoy this!
Bookroo seems like a wonderful subscription to have for children. I like that they have different choices for different ages.
