Spring fever is well upon us and now was the perfect time to receive an Organic Mushroom Farm Kit from Back to the Roots for our review. My family does love mushrooms but I’ve never tried to grow any.
Our kit was packaged in a cardboard box with easy instructions. The mushrooms grow easily right there inside that box and you don’t have to have a dark basement to keep them growing – something I was afraid of, since we don’t have a basement here in Florida. You would hit water if you dug down that far!
The kit box also included several easy mushroom recipes that would be great for kids so they could prepare their own mushroom dish from the mushrooms they grew themselves.
The first step in growing our mushroom farm was to cut the bag open. The growing medium contained mushroom spores and recycled coffee grounds.
Then we soaked the growing medium in water for 8 hours before putting it back in the box to start the growth process. The instructions said that we would have mushrooms in 7-10 days.
These are our mushrooms on Day 5. Twice daily I spritzed them with water, using the spray bottle provided in the box. They sat on a table near a window but not in direct sunlight.
Day 10 – time to harvest! Our mushrooms didn’t grow too much, and seemed to be doing poorly so I decided to go ahead and end things before they died on me! It was possibly too dry for them in our house, since with the Florida humidity we keep the AC plus dehumidifiers going inside all year. They might have been happier outside.
Here they are!
And as soon as I harvested the mushrooms, I placed potting soil in the box, added the mushroom growing medium to the top inch of soil, and planted the Heirloom Red Cherry Tomato seeds that were also included in my mushroom kit. With luck we will have some little tomatoes in a few months!
We really enjoyed growing our mushrooms and found that the kit was very user-friendly. This would indeed be great for a gift or just to enjoy the process yourself. You can see more about this and several other gardening kits available from Back to the Roots:
