Ann Landers’ Bootlegger Beans
Ann Landers’ Bootlegger Beans
My generation grew up learning some of our rights from wrongs by reading Ann Landers and Dear Abby. They were advice columnist sisters who wrote under pen names and answered questions written to them via their newspapers but were syndicated nationally. I believe Dear Abby’s daughter continued her column but of course we have the internet now. Both of the sisters posted some of their own recipes in their columns and this Ann Landers’ Bootlegger Beans recipe is one I cut out of the newspaper and have been fixing for my family since before my grown kids were born. I have never found another that I like better! Thanks, Ann Landers!
These beans come together with such everyday pantry staple ingredients. The only thing I have to run out and buy is the can of beans.
Doesn’t that make you hungry??
Ann Landers’ Bootlegger Beans
Ingredients
- 3 strips bacon
- 1/4 cup yellow onion chopped
- 1 28 oz can pork and beans
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 2 tbsp ketchup
Instructions
-
Dice the bacon and fry in a pan. When about 1/2 way done, add the onion. Pour off most of the grease.
-
Add the rest of the ingredients, stir well, and cover. Let simmer for at least 30 minutes. It is better when simmered for 2 hours, even better when baked. It gets thicker as it cools.
Such a simple recipe, just the way I like to cook!
These look so good and are very similar to what I grew up eating. I wonder what would need to be added if the beans were cooked from dry?
These sound good, I’m definitely going to try these this week.
These look and sound so yummy. I can’t wait to try them I love that it’s such an easy recipe….
This sounds like an easy recipe. I will definitely try this for my family!
