Life is so busy. I learned years ago that a project (of mine) not finished quickly sits in the closet until it is donated, so these potholders are the perfect project – fast, easy, and useful.
All you need for your new potholder is one (2 oz) skein of 4 ply worsted weight cotton yarn, such as Sugar and Cream. Be sure to use a cotton yarn as you don’t want the thing to melt when you put a hot pot on it. These potholders fold over on themselves and make their own shape.
Use an H crochet hook and a single crochet stitch:
“Wrap the yarn, from back to front, around the hook (this is called yarn over and is abbreviated yo), draw the yarn through the chain (2 loops on hook).
Yarn over once again. Draw through 2 loops on hook (one single crochet complete).”
Directions:
Chain 30. (or as many as you want to make the potholder larger or smaller).
SC in the 2nd ch from the end on the top loop. SC to the end of the chain using that top loop and put 3 SC in the last top loop.
SC down the back side of the chain. Put 2 SC in the last loop.
SC down one side of the potholder and back up the other side (in both loops of each stitch). Just crochet around and around until the pad has formed and comes together on the back side.
If you want a loop-holder, ch 20 to form the loop. Slip stitch and join it where you started the chain.
Cut yarn, leave a 12″ tail. Stitch together, secure the end and weave in the tail of the yarn.
I always take a crochet project in the car too! I will do the pot holders but will also do granny squares. Sometimes I knit socks or mittens.
A friend of mine loves to crochet. I will send her this link. Thanks!
That instruction almost could be in Swahili for the sense it makes to me.
So easy, and they would make great stocking stuffers for the holidays! I have not tried to crochet in years, but my Mom retired and recently started crocheting again, which has made me want to.
Well when I tried to crochet or knit I just never could get the hang of it. So it was never something I wanted to do. Some of my friends love to do this and often makes things for the church bazaars. I will pass it on to her. Thanks
I used to crochet during long car drives – I made squares for an afghan. Our drive to FL was a couple of days, so that was quite a bit of crocheting! This sounds like a fun idea!
I can crochet a straight line so far…lol. I am learning yet I need to sit and crochet more often.
You make it look so easy! Hopefully I can just enjoy crochet one day instead of getting frustrated!
